Let’s welcome New York Times bestselling author Skye Warren, who’s here to talk about her writing process and her new book OVERTURE. We understand this is a taboo romance. Can you tell us about it?

That definitely sounds like a forbidden romance! Tell us more about this violin prodigy…

Samantha Brooks was a child prodigy, which put her in the global spotlight at a young age. Her father was a diplomat who traveled around the world.

She was twelve when he passed away, and Liam North took guardianship of her. Since then she’s strived to be a good girl, never stepping out of line, always following the rules.

Liam rules the household with efficiency from his military background, maintaining a sort of distance from Samantha even as his life revolves around her. As she turns eighteen, she begins to break the boundaries they’ve established for the past six years, and Liam is forced to confront his changing feelings for her.

Did you listen to a lot of violin music while writing OVERTURE?

Since the heroine of OVERTURE is a classical violinist, music is a strong thread in the book. Shubert, Heifetz, and Vivaldi each get a nod in the book.

And there’s a particularly dirty scene set to Beethoven’s 5 Secrets.

The interesting thing is that I listened to so much instrumental music while writing my last two books, SURVIVAL OF THE RICHEST and THE EVOLUTION OF MAN. But while writing OVERTURE, mostly 90’s pop. It’s funny the way music influences writing. It’s not always a direct line. It makes sense in my head because the Trust Fund duet had somber undertones while OVERTURE has a sexy and youthful vibe.

How do you get ideas for your books?

It’s hard to pinpoint a single place for ideas. There are a million places for ideas. A million ideas that are constantly popping up. I actually don’t write them down when they come to me, because I know that the good ones keep coming back. In fact they won’t leave me alone.

For OVERTURE, I have to give a nod to the other books with this trope that have come before it. My favorite guardian ward romance is SEDUCER by Madeline Hunter. I also love NIKOLAI by Roxie Rivera and LORD OF ICE by Gaelen Goley. I read all three of those books years ago, and I’ve been waiting for the chance to write my own story with this element.
